Effective January 1, 2012, it will be illegal to knowingly put electronic waste (e-waste) into a landfill in Illinois. Under the Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act, electronic products have to be recycled. As a result of the new Illinois E-Waste Law, Peoria Disposal Company (PDC) will no longer pick up e-waste from residential households.
Seventeen electronic products are being banned; computers, video game consoles, computer monitors, electronic mice, printers, scanners, televisions, digital converter boxes, electronic keyboards, cable receivers, fax machines, satellite receivers, videocassette recorders, digital video disc recorders, portable digital music players, small scale servers and digital video disc players must be recycled.
PDC drivers are being instructed to leave e-waste at the curb. Drivers will affix a “stop sign” sticker to the banned electronic item with instructions on properly recycling the item. The sticker will instruct residents to go to www.ILewaste.com for more information. The website, developed by PDC, explains the new legislation, includes a list of electronics banned from landfills, as well as a list of collection sites and recyclers in the region that accept electronic waste.
Electronics can contain lead, mercury, cadmium and other environmentally harmful chemicals. Illinois is one of 17 states banning electronic waste from landfills.
The Illinois E-Waste Law is also known as Public Act 97-287 as amended by SB2106
